The story
The museum was inaugurated on 31 December 2003 in a renovated Italian-style palace on Tariq al-Horreya Street (formerly Rue Fouad). The palace was originally built for Asaad Basili Pasha, one of Alexandria's wealthy figures, and later housed the United States consulate; the Supreme Council of Antiquities acquired it in 1996 and converted it into a museum. It holds more than 1,800 artefacts representing most of the eras the city has lived through since its founding in 332 BC.
