The story
Cairo Tower was designed by the Egyptian architect Naoum Shebib and completed in 1961, during the presidency of Gamal Abdel Nasser. It rises 187 m on Gezira Island in the Nile, in the Zamalek district. Its open concrete lattice is inspired by the lotus plant, a symbol of ancient Egypt. A circular observation deck and a revolving restaurant crown the tower, with views across Greater Cairo. The tower underwent a restoration and upgrade in the late 2000s.
