The story
The museum was founded by Marcus Simaika Pasha in 1908 to house Coptic antiquities (the idea dates back to 1898) and was inaugurated in 1910. It was built on about 8,000 square metres of land offered by the Coptic Orthodox Church under Pope Cyril V. It holds the most important examples of Coptic art in the world, and its facade was designed to resemble that of the 12th-century Al-Aqmar Mosque.
