Galala Mountain
A Red Sea mountain range rising from Ain Sokhna, known for its high plateau, creamy marble and rugged desert scenery.
The story
Galala is a mountain range of the Red Sea hills in eastern Egypt, starting at Ain Sokhna in the far north and stretching south, divided into northern and southern Galala by Wadi Araba. The northern part rises to about 1,200 metres according to the Arabic source (the English source gives 3,300 ft), and the mountain supports many plant species. It was known as the Gallayat Plateaus until it was renamed in the 1920s. It is famed for Galala marble, quarried for export in shades from cream to creamy white.
