The story
Garden City is a mixed residential and administrative quarter on the east bank of the Nile, just south of downtown and Tahrir Square and north of Old Cairo, bounded by Qasr al-Ayni Street to the east and the Nile Corniche to the west. It began in the early twentieth century as a real estate development loosely based on the English garden city movement; one source says the Nile Land and Agriculture Company founded it in 1906 on the land of former palaces, and it was laid out with curving streets. It is known for its quiet, upscale and secure atmosphere, and houses the embassies of the United States, Britain, Italy and others.
