Helwan Historic Sulfur Baths & Springs

Egypt’s most storied thermal spa sanatorium, commissioned by Khedive Ismail in 1874 around natural sulfur springs gushing with restorative minerals.
The story
Thermal healing at Helwan traces back to Pharaonic times and the Umayyad era when Governor Abd al-Aziz ibn Marwan made it his health retreat in 689 AD. In 1874, Khedive Ismail built the grand Islamic-Turkish style thermal baths, turning Helwan into a premier winter sanatorium for European royalty. Its mineral springs possess exceptionally pure sulfur concentrations for treating chronic arthritis and dermatology conditions.
