The story
Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil founded the museum and gathered in it works of fine art of high value, housed in a palace built in the early 20th century. When he died in 1953 he had left the collection to his wife, on condition that she in turn bequeath it and the palace to the Egyptian government as a museum. The palace first opened as a museum in 1962. The museum stands on Kafour Street on the Nile in Dokki, Giza, and reopened to the public in April 2021 after being closed for about a decade.
