The story
The museum stands in Fustat, in Old Cairo, overlooking Ain el-Sira Lake. It began limited operation in 2017 and was officially inaugurated on 3 April 2021, after the Pharaohs' Golden Parade in which 22 royal mummies (18 kings and four queens) travelled from the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir. Its collection of around 50,000 objects runs from prehistory to modern times, taking in ancient Egyptian, Greco-Roman, Coptic and Islamic periods. The Royal Mummies Hall presents kings and queens of the 17th to 20th Dynasties in a setting inspired by the Valley of the Kings. UNESCO supported the project technically through its construction and operation.
